Classical Music Fashionista, Have a Say

~ Driven by Jessica Duchen’s writing about the fashion style of musicians.

Does fashion in the world of classical music stage amazes you? I don’t think so. Because well most of them wear the same attire in every concert. Well for the male musicians, tuxedo with bow ties and female with a dark, possibly black, night gown.

Maybe conductors and soloists are more attractive when it comes to fashion, but it’s far in the West. How about Indonesian musicians?

Well, to begin with, not all Indonesian orchestral musicians have tuxedo either in black or white. Tuxedo in the penguin like coat, complete with its tie. Most of Indonesian orchestral musicians wear a regular jacket, usually black in color, white shirt and a black bow tie. So it is quite different if compared to their colleagues in other countries, especially in Europe. While females sometimes wear a proper night gown while others just wear a black dress. Maybe we cannot expect much from the orchestral musicians, fashionly speaking.

We can also go though a peek though the wardrobe of some Indonesian choirs. This is quite interesting actually. Many of those choirs designs their own costumes, some incorporate batik, satin and even traditional attires. Many of them also experiments with their costume designs and colors which sometime is either great or even awful thing to see.

In Jakarta, conductors and soloist are the target of fashion spectacles.

I would like invite you to share your experience in concert attires, any form, whether it is for instrumentalists, vocalists, or conductors, whether you wore it yourself or you saw somebody else in it.
