One of the largest opera presentation space in the world is going to be opened today. The New Mariinsky II Theatre is across the canal of the previous historical one and will house Mariinsky Opera, Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra.
St. Petersburg welcomes its new 2,000 seats modern Theatre that will accompany the original Mariinsky Theatre with 1,600 seats and the recently built 1,100 Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall (2007). Thus, St. Petersburg is now having a complete arts complex similar to Lincoln Center, New York.
Occupies 79,000 sqm, the complex houses its own horseshoe main auditorium, a rehearsal stage, rehearsal rooms for ballet and opera company and orchestra, backstage area, working areas for 1000 staff members, a large foyer with glass façade for chamber activities, rooftop amphiteatre, and underground parking for staffs. The use of three balconies instead of four allows for more height between levels and creates better sound dispersion, especially for the rows located farther back.
